Grand Duchesses Maria and Anastasia with some soldiers from their sisters’ hospital at Tsarskoe Selo, 1915.
The Grand Duchess Anastasia was notoriously fond of sweets. A soldier from the hospital at Tsarskoe Selo remembered that she always kept crème brûlée flavored candies in her pockets, which she handed out to patients but also ate herself. She was always on the prowl for any other sweets that might present themselves. Once she noticed that a soldier in the ward had been given some candied cherries as a gift and asked to have some. As she gobbled them, she kept checking over her shoulder to make sure that none of her sisters would catch her in the act!
